THE TASTE OF THE POLISH TRADITION.
Easter is a time commemorating the suffering and resurrection of Jesus, spanning an entire week called Holy Week. It begins with Palm Sunday. A week later is Resurrection Sunday, which is the first day of Easter. The second day of the holiday is the Monday we call, Wet Monday, which is a day off from work in Poland.
Easter celebrations commemorate the resurrection of Jesus. Easter, or more precisely Easter Sunday, is the most important holiday for Christians, the most important because it commemorates the death, suffering and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and therefore the redemption of human sins.
During Holy Week, special services are held in churches. At 6:00 am on Sunday, a resurrection mass is celebrated, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus. On this day, the figure of the dead Jesus, which was displayed on Friday and Saturday, disappears from the traditional tombs of Christ, built like nativity scenes in churches.
Easter celebrations also take place in the homes of believers. Bringing home a blessed palm on Palm Sunday, preparing and blessing the holy candle on Holy Saturday, and sharing a meal – Easter breakfast on Sunday.
In most families, Sunday dinner is also celebrated. Easter egg hunts are organized for children, and some families simply give children sweets on Sunday morning. This custom is often called “bunny”.
